Introduction

Composition literally means 'Where you place things in the frame'. Now you may be thinking “I want to just capture natural photos, I don’t want to pose my kids or place things in the frame.” I hear you, and I’m the same. As a journalist, it is not exactly ethical to move people around in your photos - but you can still alter the way things appear simply by the choices that you make about how to capture what is in front of you. Simply getting down low, or standing up on something can create a really different perspective 

Make choices that create images that make people look longer and feel something. Here are some basic tips on how to do that just by the choices you make.

Remember, you need to know the rules, and then you can break them - so don’t feel like you have to stick to these forever, but they do work well. If you know all of these principles, feel free to skip through to the good stuff but if not, let’s establish the groundwork first. These are also most definitely not all of the compositional guidelines out there, they are just the ones that I find I use on a daily basis
